Application of White Fused Alumina Powder in Ceramic Membranes

Application of White Fused Alumina Powder in Ceramic Membranes

White fused alumina micro-powder is a core raw material for manufacturing high-performance inorganic ceramic membranes, mainly used to produce porous supports and separation membrane layers.

With high purity, high hardness, excellent acid and alkali resistance, and high temperature resistance, it can precisely control the pore size, flux and mechanical strength of membranes, and is widely used in demanding separation scenarios in environmental protection, chemical industry, food, pharmaceutical and other fields.

1. Core Function: Forming the Skeleton and Filter Structure of Ceramic Membranes

Ceramic membranes generally have an asymmetric multi-layer structure, and white fused alumina micro-powder plays a vital role in each layer.

(1) Support Layer — Mechanical Skeleton

  • Function: Provide high mechanical strength and high permeability to withstand system pressure and backwashing impact.
  • Performance of white fused alumina: Used as the main aggregate with coarser particle size, it forms connected large pore channels after sintering to ensure high flux of liquid and gas.
  • Advantages: High Al₂O₃ purity, extremely low impurities, avoiding low-melting glass phase generated during high-temperature sintering, and ensuring stable structure, corrosion resistance and long service life of the support body.

(2) Intermediate Transition Layer — Buffer & Flat Base

  • Function: Cover large pore defects on the surface of the support layer and provide a smooth and uniform base for the top separation membrane.
  • Performance of white fused alumina: Adopts medium particle size powder to form uniform intermediate pore channels.

(3) Top Separation Layer — Precision Filtration

  • Function: Determine the final separation accuracy for microfiltration and ultrafiltration, to intercept particles, bacteria and macromolecular substances.
  • Performance of white fused alumina: Adopts ultra-fine submicron micro-powder. Uniform micropores are formed after precise sintering.
  • Advantages: Narrow particle size distribution, uniform pore diameter, high separation accuracy, good selectivity and high permeation flux.

2. Key Performance Advantages

  1. Excellent Chemical Stability

Mainly composed of α‑alumina with a stable crystal structure, it features strong resistance to strong acids, strong alkalis and organic solvents.

It is suitable for treating corrosive wastewater, chemical liquid and oily sewage, with a far longer service life than organic membranes.

  2. High Mechanical Strength & Wear Resistance

With Mohs hardness up to 9.0, the prepared membrane element features compression resistance, bending resistance and wear resistance.

It can bear high-pressure filtration and frequent gas-water backwashing, not easy to crack or block, and suitable for long-term continuous operation.

  3. Superior Thermal Stability

Refractory temperature exceeds 2100℃, enabling stable operation under high temperature conditions.

Widely used in high-temperature gas purification, hot liquid filtration and catalytic membrane reactors.

  4. Controllable Pore Structure

The pore size, porosity and pore distribution can be accurately adjusted by matching white fused alumina powder with different particle sizes.

It covers microfiltration and ultrafiltration grades to meet diverse filtration demands in water treatment, food sterilization and chemical purification.

  5. High Purity & No Contamination

Low content of iron oxide, sodium oxide and other harmful impurities.

It meets high hygiene and purity requirements in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and semiconductor ultrapure water industries.

3. Typical Application Fields

  • Environmental water treatment: Advanced treatment of municipal sewage, industrial wastewater recycling, seawater desalination pretreatment
  • Food & pharmaceutical industry: Juice clarification, fermentation liquid sterilization, traditional Chinese medicine extraction, protein separation
  • Petrochemical industry: Catalyst recovery, acid-base liquid purification, high-temperature gas dust removal, organic solvent dehydration
  • Electronics & semiconductors: Ultrapure water preparation, photoresist wastewater treatment

4. Technical Requirements of White Fused Alumina Powder for Ceramic Membranes

  • Purity: Al₂O₃ ≥ 99.5%, low iron oxide and sodium oxide content
  • Particle size: Graded coarse powder for support layer, medium powder for transition layer, and ultra-fine micro-powder for the top separation layer
  • Key indicators: Equiaxed particles, narrow particle size distribution, low magnetism and low chloride content

Summary

White fused alumina micro-powder is an irreplaceable key material for high-end ceramic membranes.

It endows ceramic membranes with outstanding properties of corrosion resistance, high pressure resistance, high temperature resistance, high precision and long service life.
