Fatigue wear during use of wear-resistant materials such as white fused alumina

The use of white fused alumina and other wear-resistant materials for surface coating can reduce the wear on the machine or parts and extend the service life. Fatigue wear occurs during the use of the machine and parts. Here is what is fatigue wear.

When gears, rolling bearings, cams and other machine parts are rolling, sliding or compound motion, the phenomenon of surface fatigue peeling due to the long-term action of cyclic stress in the contact area is called fatigue wear or contact fatigue wear.

The main forms of fatigue wear failure are pitting and spalling, that is, pits of different depths (also called pits) and larger areas of spalling pits are produced on the original smooth contact surface. Fatigue wear is a very common form of wear. Various forms of wear can be attributed to the four most basic mechanisms, namely fatigue wear, abrasive wear, adhesive wear and corrosion (tribochemical) wear. Various complex wear phenomena are nothing more than individual or comprehensive manifestations of these four basic mechanisms.
